MERAUKE – PT Papua Agro Lestari (PAL), Tunas Sawa Erma Group (TSE Group)’s business unit, launched an environmental preservation campaign in Guiss (Sub)village, Rawa Kasat, Ulilin District, Merauke Regency on Saturday (6/24), in an attempt to safeguard local flora and fauna populations.
Its activities began with the installation of a signpost featuring photos and names of the three species living in the area’s protected forest, a collaborative work by company officers and locals. Next was a short class where PT PAL shared information on flora and fauna protection efforts through interactive methods like showing pictures of endemic creatures by the likes of Anisoptera and Eucalyptus varieties, light red meranti (Shorea leprosula), birds-of-paradise, cockatoos, and cassowaries.
“Putting up signage is one of our ways of building awareness and recognition of protected, endemic, and endangered plants and animals. We hope people will take part in preservation efforts, especially for wildlife in high conservation value areas around the company,” said TSE Group’s HCV-ISPO Assistant Manager, Raja Surya Pangestu Aritonang.
Campaigns like this are part of Corporate Social Contribution and ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) programs that aim to provide nature protection standards for the palm oil industry in line with Law 5/1990. This law governs the conservation of living natural resources and their ecosystems.
PT PAL invites nearby neighborhoods to take an active role in keeping wild plants and animals from being destroyed, whether in protected forests or high conservation value zones. “On behalf of the Guiss people who came here today, I’d like to express my appreciation for the company’s program. I hope this continues,” said Guiss youth leader Glen Maikuin.
PT PAL is a business unit of Tunas Sawa Erma Group or TSE Group, which runs a palm oil plantation business. TSE Group is committed to practicing sustainable palm oil governance and continues to innovate to prioritize its social and environmental responsibilities. (Fionny/TSE)
