BOVEN DIGOEL – Farmer groups stand at the forefront and are the main actors of economic development through their frequent use of garden and livestock harvests to meet everyday needs.
One of these communities lies deep in the Naga (Sub)village of Jair District, Boven Digoel Regency, South Papua. Known by the name Pangin Hutan Mbian, it is a group of farmers, ranchers, and gardeners who connect over similar climate conditions and a passion for business development.
Hoping to strengthen the members’ finances, PT Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) arranged a trip to the (sub)village Saturday (5/30) and brought them six pigs and a pigpen under its Corporate Social Contribution (CSC) program.
Aside from donating, like in this event, the company actively mentors farmer groups as they grow their businesses, officer in charge Yohanes Sada Nanlohi said to the PR team.
The gifts were handed over in a symbolic ceremony involving Pangin Hutan Mbian’s leader, Kristina Doneti. “I would like to thank the company for its support and concern for our (sub)village’s economy. We’d try our best to take care of these [pigs and pigpen],” she said in her speech.
Pigs are a potential commodity in South Papua, which is a promising market for swine farms and pork products. TSE hopes the pig farm can expand through a sustainable farming process and that villagers get results that can help them financially.
One of Naga’s RT (neighborhood unit) chiefs, Bein Leo Gembenop, expressed his gratitude. “On behalf of the (sub)village, I want to give many thanks to PT TSE and I hope we as a community will start being productive with this donation,” he said.
PT TSE is part of Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group, which runs a palm oil plantation business in Papua. PT TSE is committed to practicing sustainable palm oil governance and keeps innovating in an effort to prioritize fulfilling its environmental and social responsibility. (Fionny/TSE)
